Farm Trans is an established logistics service provider, delivering comprehensive and integrated logistics solutions as a trusted value chain partner.
With around 700 employees specializing in bulk and conditioned transport and warehousing across Europe and the UK. It manages logistics from start to finish, ensuring reliable deliveries. Farm Trans serves large food producers and wholesalers, transporting goods like potatoes and onions from farms to factories for processing and distribution.
After processing, Farm Trans provides temperature-controlled transport for ambient, fresh, and frozen products to various locations across Europe, including the UK. In addition to transport, Farm Trans is expanding its role as a 4PL logistics service provider.
Sustainability is central to Farm Trans' mission, focusing on reducing environmental impact and staying compliant with regulations like CSRD, offering more sustainable logistics options to its clients. However, compliance becomes challenging without clear insights into supply chain-related CO2 emissions.
The need for transparent CO2 emissions reporting in logistics
Since 2024, Suzanne Spierings has led Farm Trans' sustainability efforts, ensuring operations align with environmental regulations. A key part of her role is maintaining compliance with the CSRD, which requires, amongst other things, transparent CO2e emissions reporting.
Farm Trans was already committed to sustainability, but their emissions tracking relied on estimates. Before using BigMile’s carbon accounting software, Farm Trans used Excel spreadsheets and external consultants to track emissions—an imprecise and expensive approach that also limited Farm Trans’ control of its data.
Suzanne saw the need for a more accurate and transparent solution, “We wanted to take ownership of our data and gain detailed insights into our CO2e emissions. Together with Esmee Snijders, our Business Analyst, we have worked on unlocking the data to ensure that BigMile provides us with the right insights."

Why Farm Trans chose BigMile for more accurate and transparent CO2 reporting
Suzanne’s prior experience at another organization included working with BigMile, which she found to be a reliable carbon accounting tool. This made carbon accounting software BigMile the clear choice for Farm Trans to measure, analyze, and report CO₂ emissions. This approach enables detailed insights and supports informed decision-making.
The next step in our collaboration with BigMile is to implement an API integration with Farm Trans’ existing Transport Management System (TMS). This will enable faster processing, reduce manual input, and improve overall efficiency in calculating and reporting CO₂ emissions across our operations.
“BigMile helped us move from broad estimates to precise insights. We can now report at company-wide, holding, or customer levels,” Suzanne explains.
Farm Trans selected BigMile for several key reasons:
- ISO certification: BigMile’s calculation methodology is accredited and aligns with industry standards like the GLEC framework.
- Well-to-wheel transparency: unlike other solutions, BigMile provides full visibility of emissions from fuel source to delivery.
- Data ownership: In the future, the API integration will enable Farm Trans to retain control of its emissions data and analyze it directly within its existing TMS.
- Legal & regulatory compliance: advanced reporting capabilities simplifies compliance with sustainabilty and data security regualtions like the CSRD.
“BigMile gives us complete transparency, from fuel source to final delivery,” says Suzanne. “Some solutions only measure tank-to-wheel emissions, but we need full visibility for both compliance and operational insights.”
BigMile’s carbon analytics solution gives Farm Trans complete visibility into their emissions. These insights help them make smarter transport decisions.
Better CO2 insights and smarter transport decisions
By implementing BigMile, Farm Trans significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of its CO2 emissions tracking. These are the key benefits:
- More precise tracking: granular emissions reporting provides reliable, detailed CO2 calculations at the holding, company, and customer levels.
- Sustainable decision-making: strategic insights support future transport solutions, including alternative fuels and electrification.
- Higher accuracy: transportation at gold level means Farm Trans can track diesel consumption per license plate, giving highly detailed and accurate emissions data.
- Fewer inconsistencies: improved data accuracy helps identify and correct errors for more reliable reporting.
- Stronger compliance: greater transparency allows for verified reports that customers and regulators can trust.
- Extensive reporting capabilities: In 2024, Farm Trans handled 226.113 consignments, making comprehensive CO2 reporting possible at scale.
BigMile also allows Farm Trans to analyze emissions across various transport solutions. Whether bulk transport or refrigerated goods, accurate emissions data helps optimize load factors and overall efficiency.
The global logistics provider is also exploring alternative transport options, and BigMile’s platform helps guide those decisions with the necessary data. Suzanne adds, “BigMile helps us understand the impact of using electric or alternative fuels. We can look at this for specific routes or as a percentage, and it gives us useful insights.”
Cutting emissions with electric trucks and BigMile data
With BigMile fully integrated, Farm Trans is now looking at ways to reduce its emissions and offer more sustainable transport options to its clients. This includes transitioning some of its fleet vehicles to alternative fuels or the use of new technologies; from diesel trucks to electric trucks.
Using BigMile’s emissions reporting capabilities, Farm Trans can accurately track the emissions from each vehicle and easily analyze how the switch to alternative fuels or electric trucks impacts its overall emissions. This helps to justify investments in sustainability initiatives and ensure Farm Trans stays on track to meet its long-term goals.
“With BigMile, we can show what the future costs would be if we keep driving diesel versus switching to electric or HVO, helping our customers make informed decisions before the costs rise.”
