About BigMile

BigMile is a tech company that offers solutions to calculate, analyze and report on multimodal transport-related carbon emissions. By building our own SaaS platform and extensively relying on API integrations to implement the best ways to calculate, allocate and reduce carbon emissions, we make it easy for our customers to start measuring their carbon footprint as the basis for reducing emissions against the backdrop of the 2030 and 2050 targets.

Our SaaS platform is suitable for companies with a regional or city-wide coverage area, as well as for globally active multinationals that use various transport modalities.

How it all began

Jan Pronk, CEO

The origin of BigMile lies within a project by the Dutch government. After the Paris Climate Change Agreement in 2015, the Dutch government wanted to provide guidelines for the logistics and mobility sector on how to measure transport-related CO2 emissions and allocate emissions on a shipment-level. During this initial project, research had been conducted to find the best methodologies and tooling to accurately measure and allocate CO2 emissions.

Building on the existing European EN16258 norm, development of the technology was started. At the end of 2020, this government project was finalized, which laid the foundation of the BigMile platform. With a few entrepreneurs coming together, BigMile B.V. was born. When I was asked to take part and lead this new adventure, I immediately said yes.

With more than 25 years of experience in the world of logistics and IT, it became clear to me that insights into CO2 emissions would become a necessity in the next years. Upcoming emission reporting regulations and worldwide sustainability goals, also in the logistics and supply chain industry, were already trending topics back then.

I’m convinced that in the next few years, CO2 emission will be seen as a currency just like Euros and Dollars, therefore becoming a substantial part of financial business practices. Hence the need to be able to execute logistic activities in an efficient and sustainable way, not only to help reduce CO2 emissions, but also since it will be the only way to make enough margins and drive profit from conducting business.

For now, BigMile consists of 15 employees (and counting!) and helps over 140+ customers. Looking ahead, I foresee BigMile to be the accepted standard solution to calculate end-to-end, transport-related CO2 emissions, ready for accountancy, for small business but also multinationals. Because every mile with a small footprint is a BigMile!

What countries does BigMile operate in?

BigMile is headquartered in the Netherlands and serves clients across Europe, the US, Asia, and Australia. BigMile's client base includes Farm Trans, Ofload, De Rijke Group, Meelunie, and many more.

What types of emissions does BigMile support calculation for?

BigMile supports calculation of transport and supply chain-related CO₂e emissions, which can be scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions depending on whether you own or outsource your transport activities. These emissions typically fall under the subcategories of Scope 3.4 (Upstream Transportation and Distribution) and Scope 3.9 (Downstream Transportation and Distribution) under the GHG Protocol.

Who is BigMile best suited for?

BigMile is designed for shippers, carriers, logistics service providers (LSPs), and field service companies that want to calculate, analyze, and report on transport and supply chain-related CO₂e emissions. It is suitable for both regional operators and global companies, with different features and plans available depending on their needs.

Software providers looking to add emissions calculation capabilities to their existing platforms can also integrate BigMile's Emissions API directly into their workflows.

How many companies use BigMile?

BigMile's carbon accounting software is used by over 250 companies—across Europe, the US, Asia, and Australia—to calculate, analyze, and report their CO₂e emissions, and the Emissions API is available in over 30 software.

How does BigMile compare to online emissions calculators?

Online emissions calculators are sufficient for one-off emissions calculations but lack the granularity and insights needed when calculating emissions for multiple journeys or across your operations.

BigMile provides shipment-level CO₂e emissions data using a calculation methodology aligned with ISO 14083:2023 and the GLEC Framework. This means you can provide accurate emissions data to customers and gain insights into emissions hotspots and opportunities to reduce your carbon footprint.

My customers don't ask for emissions data. What are the other benefits of using BigMile?

BigMile provides value beyond customer emissions reporting through cost savings, competitive advantage, and carbon footprint reduction. This includes:

- Alignment with CountEmissionsEU (new EU standard for transport emissions)
- Monitoring the ETS costs supplier charges in Air and Seafreight
- Tracking CO₂e  reductions over time and offering more sustainable options to clients
- Calculating emissions using primary data for Scope 3.4 & 3.9 emissions
- Allowing easy Carbon Insetting calculations (CO₂ per shipment/Client)
- Improving the efficiency of transport operations
- Better investment decisions with energy shift scenario modeling

How does BigMile calculate emissions when primary data for some carriers or suppliers is unavailable?

BigMile prioritizes the use of primary data for the most accurate emissions calculations. Where primary data is unavailable, BigMile applies default emission factors from the GLEC Framework and calculates emissions based on the journey and shipment details.

Users can also request emissions data directly from subcontractors through the platform to improve data completeness over time. For more detail on how missing data is handled in specific scenarios, please contact our team.
