To meet growing customer demand for transparent sustainability data, Hutchison Ports Europe Intermodal (HPEI) has partnered with BigMile to calculate and report CO₂ emissions across its barge, rail, and road transport services.

For over 15 years, Hutchison Ports Europe Intermodal (HPEI) has been connecting the Netherlands’ and Belgium’s major seaports with cities across Western and Central Europe via barges, rail, and road. To meet growing customer expectations for sustainability data and to meet new sustainability regulations, HPEI has now partnered with BigMile to more accurately calculate and report its CO₂ emissions.

Why HPEI chose to partner with BigMile

HPEI offers its customers more sustainable transport options than many of its competitors, via over 30 inland barge services and 40 rail journeys each week. However, with increasing demand from clients for transparent, audit-ready emissions data, HPEI saw the need to upgrade its carbon accounting approach using BigMile.

As HPEI’s Product Manager, Vincent Krijgsman, explains:

We’ve seen a growing number of customers asking for insights into the environmental benefits of booking with HPEI. We want to provide that transparency, and do so in a way that meets international standards. With BigMile’s expertise, certifications, and the solution they offer, we’ve found the perfect partner. We look forward to making progress on our sustainability journey, together with our customers and BigMile.

By using BigMile’s carbon accounting software, HPEI can more accurately calculate, analyze, and report on CO₂ emissions from across its transport operations and easily provide emissions data to its clients at transport leg or shipment level.

This supports compliance with sustainability requirements like the CSRD or the VSME standard, for both HPEI and its customers through customizable, audit-ready reports that can be quickly exported or automatically shared with customers in the portal.

Sven Poot of BigMile added:

Companies like HPEI are already leading the way in providing sustainable transport options, and we’re delighted to help them measure and report on their emissions more accurately.

Over the coming months, HPEI will gain deeper insights into the emissions of its barge and rail services through customizable reports and dashboards. HPEI can then use these insights to track its progress against sustainability goals and identify opportunities to further reduce the emissions of its transport operations.
