Transport/Logistics
Carbon intensity
Carbon intensity refers to the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions produced per unit of activity e.g. per tonne of freight transported, per kilometre travelled, or per euro of revenue generated. It is used to compare the environmental impact of different operations, routes, or transport modes.
What are the benefits of measuring carbon intensity?
By measuring the carbon intensity of transport modes and routes, you can:
- Identify high-emission routes or carriers and take action to improve efficiency
- Support carbon reduction targets by focusing on emission intensity of individual transport modes or routes
- Benchmark performance across sites, modes, or partners in a standardized way
- Comply with regulations like the CSRD that require emissions to be reported in relation to activity
